Snoop Says Rappers And Imus Are ‘Two Separate Things’; Talks New Comp By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Rahman Dukes

“It’s a completely different scenario,” said Snoop, barking over the phone from a hotel room in L.A. “[Rappers] are not talking about no collegiate basketball girls who have made it to the next level in education and sports. We’re talking about ho’s that’s in the ‘hood that ain’t doing sh–, that’s trying to get a n—a for his money. These are two separate things. First of all, we ain’t no old-ass white men that sit up on MSNBC [which announced Wednesday it would drop its simulcast of Imus’ radio show] going hard on black girls. We are rappers that have these songs coming from our minds and our souls that are relevant to what we feel. I will not let them mutha—-as say we in the same league as him.”

For me, the problem with the Street Poetry Defense is that there aren’t that many street poets. Snoop Dogg is one of them, of course. But the vast majority use misogyny without contibuting anything important to culture, their shield for now.

I propose that Pitchfork Media be appointed to head the Department of Misogyny Approval. Another member of my street poet club, Cam’Ron, threatened to “take ya girl fuck her face” on an album that they called the ninth best of 2005, beating out Fiona Apple, Franz Ferdinand and tons of other indie rock acts I never listened to.

Their official take on this exact issue:

“Cam’s misogyny comes through the speakers like a slap; it’s jarring and frightening and sad. But Cam isn’t heartless. a few of the songs have an air of weary lamentation, like Tony Soprano driving home after killing his cousin, wondering how it came to this: “I give you a earful, it’s tearful/ Told my mother I hustle, and she said, ‘Be careful’.”

That was written in 2004. Does that justify mysogyny in 2007?

no, i didn’t script those. but i thought they were really excellent and (perhaps am being the self-serving navel gazer i just criticized) i was proud of how my honchos handled the incident.

Did you get to script the comments on–woo hoo!–Imus’s firing? ‘Cause I’d adore you even more then.
