an update on our attempt to be ellen’s road-trip team. DENIED! she instead chose a bunch of chicks from henderson, nevada who made a determinedly unfunny video. from a producer’s perspective, i get it. getting four chicks from a small town to drop everything, get in a car and do whatever you say for 10 days would be easier and cheaper than, say, getting four women in four different major cities, all quite willful and far away from los angeles, to convene on a moment’s notice. but damn, we’d be worth the hassle and expense! beth also astutely pointed out that ellen’s humor is at its finest when she has ordinary/unfunny people to play off of. faced with the likes of the extraordinary navarre chicks, it might not work as good. these are the rationales we’re using to stroke our collectively bruised ego. wah wah. regardless, we still love you, ellen!

dancing while i can

i love president’s day. slept late, ran outside (it’s 60 degrees in nyc, yo). met a friend for coffee, did a coupla things at the office. going to meet another old pal for drinks & dinner. spring is in the air, if only for a day. a nice reminder that no season lasts forever. administrations end. so do bad jobs (and good ones too, unfortunately). babies grow (just look how big my beloved snugglekins is already). people change. everyone dies. we are the dancers and life is the dance. when we’re gone, the dance goes on. while we’re here, we may as well enjoy it.

last night’s sharon jones & the dap-kings/budos band concert at the beacon theater was one of the best live shows i have ever attended. seriously. i see a shitload of live music and don’t remember anything nearly as invigorating. intimate & classy, the beacon is. we had nice seats. the opening act, the budos band, is a bunch of badass white-boy brooklyn-hailing hippie-ster afro-caribbean funk musicians. so many of them, it was approaching earth wind & fire proportions (i think budos has 12 whereas EW&F had 15 at one point). anyways, they opened the show in high style. and then, the dap-kings. they were dressed real classy, like a mod ratpack. the lighting was gorgeous.
and sharon, SHARON!
you know when you hear the records that this woman is special. but to see her live is to realize she’s a force of nature. the minute she steps on the stage you forget about all those guys behind her. she’s it. a beacon. she’s it. totally authentic, hilarious, and energetic beyond anything i’ve seen. she gives the audience everything, and has so much fun doing it that by the end everyone is walking out smiling and feeling all lovey dovey. also i love that she’s just hitting her career highs at age 52. for years industry people told her no. in the absence of any recording contract as a solo singer, she spent many years working as a corrections officer at Rikers Island and armored car guard for Wells Fargo Bank, until receiving a mid-life career break in 1996. there’s a whole long story about mark ronson and amy winehouse and all that but i don’t feel like getting into it. suffice it to say this is one amazing show and if you have the opportunity to see them live run, don’t walk.

Get ready for zen col overdrive. I’m reading eckart tolle’s new book. it’s illuminating. It is very helpful in understanding myself, my zany egoic devices. The main takeaway is that instead of getting hung up on what’s not … criticizing, getting mad at “the bad guys” or trying to change people who are unconsciously ruled by their pain, we should accept what is and move on. That which you resist persists. let go of hostilities, defenses, all the things that we use to make ourselves feel superior to others. We’re all one. He brought in a quote from Macbeth that I totally dig.
“Out, out, brief candle! Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” William Shakespeare (Macbeth — Act V, Scene V).

it’s plain as day. i knew it when i saw the 60 minutes piece and i can tell from his testimony and mcnamee’s testimony today that clemens is full of it. we’ve seen this before. someone who’s so used to being extraordinary that he convinces himself of his own lie.
hey roger, i’ve got a song for you:

this song, a timbaland classic, has been a favorite since 1996. as a wise woman once said, “it’s so obvious, it isn’t even subtle.” wondering which is more OTT — “pony” by ginuwine or “too close” by next. hmm….

“just” by mark ronson. i was already in love with the album and the dude. this video just reinforced those feelings. AV heaven! and in case you’re not familiar (i wasn’t), it’s a spoof of the original radiohead video for “just”.
