pay attention to the woman behind the curtain …

April 20, 2008 · 1 Comment

I’ve often discussed with fellow Marcom professionals how odd and cool it is that we’re the ones who actually create the strategies at our organizations. Those who do the heavy lifting on the strategy templates, the Board presentations, the communications plans know that it’s their IDEAS that are the most valuable part of what they’re contributing. Not the document, or PowerPoint slides, the binders or any other supporting form of media. Marcom people create the framework, and the framework leads to the story, and the story leads to the work − everyone’s work. In the ideal world, the Marcom folks work closely with the leaders they are supporting. When they’re too far removed, no one benefits. The best experiences I’ve had were when I was working directly with those I was supporting. I learned how they spoke, what they envisioned, what they valued, liked and disliked. When they are good, smart people, it’s a plum job. You get to learn so much, see so much, grow so much. It’s like being a CEO yourself, but on a much more livable strain.

What Seinfeld character are you?

George Costanza

You are Jerry’s best friend - even though you are neurotic and slow-witted, he keeps you around to have a `loser of the group`. Life has a funny way of screwing you over at every turn, and your parents are psychotic. And no matter what you do, you`ll never compare to Lloyd Braun.

wisdom

April 14, 2008 · 3 Comments

“Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.” — Winston Churchill

“Follow your instincts. That’s where true wisdom manifests itself.” — Oprah Winfrey

“True wisdom is less presuming than folly. The wise man doubteth often, and changeth his mind; the fool is obstinate, and doubteth not; he knoweth all things but his own ignorance.” — Akhenaton

“Every man is a fool for at least five minutes every day; wisdom consists in not exceeding the limits.” – Elbert Hubbard

“What You Waiting For?” by Gwen Stefani.

We love Gwennie. LOOOVE love Gwennie. And this video is oh so apropos.

Naturally, I’m worried if I do it alone
Who really cares, cause it’s your life
You never know, it could be great
Take a chance cause you might grow
Oh, ah, oh

el fin de semana

April 14, 2008 · 1 Comment

what a week. been workin’ like a daaaawwg. it’s always like this this time of year. but man oh man. friday i forced myself to leave the office at 6:30 and met some pals for a friend’s bday. sat. i wrote for four to five hours. made good structural progress, but still have a ways to go on the words. got a short run in and had dinner at spill’s. we watched 3:10 to yuma, the 1957 original with glenn ford.

woke up and edited, read aloud, tweaked for about 2 hours. not at all perfect or done but i had to give myself a day off so i emailed it off and cut the chord. ran again, briefly. then met the gals for brunch at taralucci e vino and heard about new boyfriends, new jobs and various euro adventures.

left there, picked up a zipcar and headed to jerz for a mini party for bro bri’s 35th bday. snugglekins was in full effect. bri had a bunch of 8 millimeter film converted to DVD and we watched incredible old videos of our grandparents — pre-WWII getting married in brooklyn. cool to see them so young and vital. and then my mom as a hilarious, hammin’ in up baby and little girl. so funny and cute. also my parents on their  honeymoon in 1969. very cool and trippy to watch. the goal is to edit it down, add music and share with the entire fam.

am really glad that i took some time off and connected with people i love. that’s the best way for me to manage stress and allows me to come back refreshed and ready to go on monday.

there’s quite a profile about chris matthews in the nytimes mag today. i’ve always thought he was a jackass … an entertaining jackass as evidenced by his appearance on ellen.

caveat emptor

if you hire or marry or engage with a crazy person, and treat them poorly, your business can easily become the world’s. blogs, you tube, email — it’s impossible to stop the flow of information, and to prevent a disgruntled individual from exposing intimate, embarrassing details. the lesson in all of this — be careful who you let close and treat everyone with respect.

Writing without typos is totally outdated

April 10, 2008 · No Comments

a great post from penelope trunk. of course i still want to be perfect all around, but the occasional typo is not the end of the world.

So what if your ideas have hyphens in the wrong places and you turn an adverb into a noun? People can almost always figure out what you’re saying anyway, but they won’t care enough to try without a great idea lurking there to attract their effort. And there’s a reason that people who have amazing ideas get paid twenty times more than people who have amazing grammar: Ideas are worth a lot more to us.
