what a day folks. this time tomorrow it will be over. i am in the home stretch. during a break from rehearsals today i took myself up to central park to sit and relax and read a book about patience. it got old quick and i noticed a really cute guy walking by and smiling at me. so i smiled back. and he smiled back. and it went on and started getting ridiculous and i started to laugh.
at that moment a zany ignatius riley looking dude who was walking by from the other direction stopped and said, “wait, i know i’m not looking my best these days but are you laughing at me?!” to which i answered no, of course not. the cute guy kept moving along and ignatius stayed. ignatius asked if i was a real new yorker and then answered his own question stating, “of course you are. you’re talking to me. you’re laughing at life.”
he seemed like a nice man who just needed to chat. he’d come in to the city for the day from westchester for an inventor conference. he was eating a bag of those nasty nuts they sell on the street, dropping them and offering me some every few minutes. he had just for men, a bad mustache (what’s a good mustache these days, really?). he gave me his business card and apparently he is the president of an ultrasound company (of all things). i told him i am a writer and left the details thin. he asked if i knew any professional writers. i said indeed, i know quite a few. he asked if i knew a particular one. it turned out that the one he referenced is a family friend. i babysat her grandchildren 20 years ago, who are now grown adults.
after about 11 minutes i grew impatient and checked my blackberry. he took it as a signal to leave and was very apologetic about taking up my time. he gave me his email address and urged me to contact him so he can help cast me in his business partner’s son’s online videos (sweet!). i took it and bid him farewell. moments later one of those grown adult grandchildren-of-famous-writer came strolling up and shouted out my name. i was seated right there on the same bench. i hadn’t seen her in months and the fact that she came by in that very moment was total kismet.
a day i won’t soon forget.

My Media
May 13, 2008 · 4 Comments
I used to love newspapers. I subscribed and read. Not cover to cover, but pretty extensively. Several papers. Now I don’t read any. I cancelled the WSJ over a year ago. I let my weekend subscription to the NYTimes lapse over 6 months ago. I plan not to renew with The Economist when my subscription’s up.
There is something about the physical bulk of printed papers and mags that grosses me out. In the information age, info is ubiquitous ─ why would I want such a huge portion, assembled by someone whose taste and interests don’t necessarily mirror mine ─ hoisted on me each day or each week? I am a smart person who quite enjoys creating my own survey of the day’s stories. I pull stories off the web. I make my own media.

coutdown to troncones

two weeks from now at this time, if the fates have it, i’ll be boarding a plane to ixtapa/zihuatanejo, mexico. soy encantada. people keep asking me where in mexico that is, and in my geographical ignorance, i haven’t been able to answer … until now. it’s on the southwest side of the country. it’s a small fishing village 15 miles away from ixtapa and 35 miles from zihuatanejo. i fly to texas first (3 hours, 45 mins) and then texas to mexico (2 hours, 35 mins). i will not bring a computer. i will not check email. am hoping it will be an upscale sort of walden for me (if ever there was an oxymoron).
from the wikipedia page on troncones:
It is a small beach village of about 700 residents. Mostly Mexican but more and more American and Canadian citizens are staying full time.
There are miles and miles of sandy beaches, you can swim here though care must be taken because of the undertow and sometimes big surf. Ask around for more swimable beaches of Manzanillo Bay, Majahua and Play Buena Vista.
It is famous as a surf destination, (the most famous is to the north at La Saladita). It is not a built up beach resort, like Ixtapa, there are some good restaurants and hotels but not high rises. There are vacation rentals and bed and breakfasts.

the long blondes − couples
May 11, 2008 · 2 Comments
hot, smart, tough, and a bit sad. the thin lines between space time love and hate. that’s what the long blondes’ second lp couples invokes. feeling all the complications of dating, independence and being a timeless, sensitive woman in a world that favors egoic alpha males … it’s what my ears like to hear. not linear. it’s messy… sexy messy. new wave, brit pop, punk, rock … chrissy hynde meets logan’s run meets the harajuku girls. when she made uk music mag nme’s cool list, long blondes front woman kate jackson said, “they probably thought they didn’t have enough girls. it was so overrun with boring boys, they needed someone to bring a touch of glamour.”
well said sister. i love this record. it’s got the montage-collage sound of the world we’re living in right now. not old, not new. very now. makes me long for an atari as much as a guitar hero. makes me wanna dance, drink, give someone the finger and have a scandalous affair before settling into a state of complete zen detachment. it’s like liz lemmon saying: “suck it monkeys!” in one episode and then having a baby jones in the next. we’re all inconsistent …. it’s just that some of us deal with it better. some even make it look good.
