socrates says “know thyself.” buddha says “love thyself”
buddha is far more true.
unless you love yourself you will never love yourself.
knowing comes only later on.
love prepares the ground. love is the possibility of knowing oneself; love is the right way to know oneself.

How does that work if the self you love is an asshole?

if you truly love yourself, it’s impossible to remain an asshole.
while you’ll see a lot of assholes posturing as lovers of self, it’s actually self loathing that makes assholes assholes.

self-love, when it is honest and nurturing, fosters compassion toward others.
