desultory thoughts

1. i discovered an amazing book in my mom’s collection: Shakespeare’s Insults: Educating Your Wit. this is just a quick, cursory random sampling from a book of gems: You herd of boils and plagues. One light of brain. Nothing but lechery: all incontinent varlets! If beauty have a soul, this is not she. He that loves to be flattered is worthy of the flatterer. …

2. saw district 9 and crazy heart. district 9 was cool, interesting. someone had told me it was the best film of 2009. i truly doubt that. enjoyable tho. crazy heart, in contrast, really got to me. jeff bridges is one cool mofo. sang all those songs for reals, too. he reminds me of someone from my past, who has a special place in my own crazy heart. that hippy thing, the lack of inhibition. the speaking truth to power, and being all out there open, demonstrative and raw. in this role he was raw as hell. a sloppy sad alcoholic who’s teetering on the brink of doom. the film captures the ugliness of addiction. i was warned in advance it could be tough to watch, given what i went through with my dad. it was close to home but not nearly as graphic or terrible as real life (for better or for worse). i highly recommend it, and shall be downloading the soudtrack from iTunes shortly!

3.  it’s interesting who sticks around. the people in life. who are there for the long haul, who fade out but eventually come boomeranging back. if you went back 10 or 20 years would it be these people that you expected to still be on the scene? some yes, but others no way. contexts change. surprising things happen all the time. some friends become family. others evaporate. or go out in flames. people who dominated your life are now on the periphery, if anywhere at all.it’s funny how that happens.

4. BGK. baby girl kenny. i am losing my mind. she should be arriving tomorrow or the next day. i cannot wait for the week ahead. also, kev is coming in from SF on wed. it will be a kenny family bonanza.
