The first Valentine’s Day I can remember

by colleen on February 14, 2012

I was a student at Zion Lutheran Nursery School (raised Catholic but that was where I went) … so probably 4 or 5 years old. I was SO excited for Valentine’s Day … I had my red turtleneck and chords, white sweater with a giant heart, and my heart barrettes all ready to go.

In addition to dressing me up so cutely (as she always did) Mom helped me write out all my Valentine’s cards … I was enamored of the concept of trading fun little notes with the whole class. The most special Valentine of them all was for Christopher Rose. He was my first crush ever. He had dark hair and big brown eyes. All the girls loved him, but I was pretty sure he loved me more than all the others. We had something special so I made sure to pick the best card of the batch for him.

The night of the 13th I started running a fever. I had a fitful sleep. Valentine’s Day morning my parents broke the news that I could not go to school that day. I cried and cried. Talk about disappointment! I begged, I pleaded but no dice. I had to stay home.

Unbeknownst to me, my Dad drove to my school during his lunch hour to drop off my Valentines and pick up the cards others had prepared for me. To my delight, he came home with a big satchel with cards from the class, cupcakes and treats the teacher had set aside for me, and a teddy bear. I was elated. I don’t even remember whether I got a special note from Christopher Rose. My Dad was my first Valentine!

Very cool story. Like most boys, I was incredibly stupid (I started wising up maybe five years ago). I got valentine’s cards for everybody, and got some back, but I was always afraid to talk to the girls I really liked.
