she don’t gotta have it

ShesGottaHaveIt_posteri watched the first two episodes of the netflix series SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT on a plane.* i will NOT continue with further episodes. i love spike the auteur. a true artist. i loved the LOOK of the show. of course the music and humor were aces. BUT the story, the main character Nola just didn’t seem authentic to me.

she seemed like a dude’s idea of what a super-empowered woman would be. living alone in a gorgeous apartment, spending her days as an artist, having all manner of satisfying and frequent sex with multiple partners. being invulnerable – if not physically than emotionally. and of course she is insanely gorgeous because only gorgeous women get to be self actualized.

this is the stuff of male fantasy – not female fantasy. kinda like beatrix kiddo was quentin’s fantasy. freakishly beautiful, outrageously strong willed, expertly skilled, the mind, body and temperament of a martial arts master. unattainable. NB: here we are 16 years later, having learned how he made uma drive the car against her better judgement and she almost killed herself. Grrrrrrr.

for starters, Nola would NEVER go for mars blackmon, the ugly guy on the bike. yes, these are caricatures, and he’s a light-hearted court jester type. and the story is trying to suggest that she wants fun and levity in her life so she goes out and gets it through that guy. but it doesn’t ring true. she is machiavellian in every sense of the word. not in any universe would she go for an unattractive sneaker obsessed kid who doesn’t have his own phone. NOT HAPPENING.

and her reaction to the late night attack rings false. a man grabs her on the street as she’s walking home in the dark, says threatening things and stops just short of greater violence. she frees herself and escapes. given how she conducts herself in life, i don’t see nola openly express her feelings of vulnerability to all of her friends and lovers. i’m not buying it.

these are just a couple of the errant details. i read up on the series and apparently a lot of women wrote contributed to it. but the macho spike vibe looms large, IMO. just can’t invest more into this one, knowing what i know, feeling what i feel.

* these are fresh perspectives on the new netflix series that have no relation to the 1986 motion picture.

Stories I got stories.

heartcollageThey are all building up. Perhaps this coming personal phase will be an explosion of expression. When I blow this mofo out, well … head for the hills.

I was thinking about the film “Paper Heart.” I have not seen it yet … just saw the web site and clips* and I am intrigued. It is a faux documentary that pretends to be real. Understood … faux is faux but the marketing implies that it plays directly off reality. I’m getting all jumbled but if you know what I mean, you know what I mean. Sorta montage collage.

It might be fun, but then it might just be 1.5 hours of hipster bratties in their glasses and hoodies being too cool for school. I’ll reserve judgment. Any which way, I dig the concept and think the creators are badass for getting it done and putting it out there.

I have this theory, unoriginal for sure, that the next phase of entertainment will be organic stories where there is no casting, no fundraising or formal scriptwriting & showrunning. We’ll all be out there blogging, vlogging, tweet-upping and whatnot and the best part of creativity will occur where our experiences just collide. For some of us it will simply be life – not “work” per se. For others it will be the show. The ultimate manifestation of Shakespeare’s “All the world’s a stage.”

Now, this is already happening for sure. It’s called culture. But entertainment itself shall become less and less institutionalized. The formal, giant artificial machinery will keep giving way until the line is totally blurred. (This will be the progression with all large institutions, BTW). Like the JL quote I trip out, that anchors this here blog: “Reality leaves a lot to the imagination.”

* I am irritated that Charlyne Yi did not interview any women comics or actors in the video clips on the official movie web site. What the frack?

richard bey in the new SBC flick

bruno-poster1devoted readers may recall my affinity for the richard bey show. much to my surprise, today at the newsstand,   i spotted richard bey on the cover of the new york observer. i read the article and found it quite interesting. a colleague told me that dicky b appears in the new sascha baron choen film, bruno. so apparently my pals and i are not the only ones inspired to pretend to be part of that insane world. i was not a huge borat person, though parts were quite funny. i am going to have to see bruno, based on the richard bey bit alone. bruno is out in july, and the “meinspace” page can be found at http://www.meinspace.com/bruno. the movie’s tagline: “Ze biggest film about a hot vhite guy since Passion Of Ze Christ”

I’m in L-007-ve.

quantum-of-solace1phyll and i saw quantum of solace. battery park city theater friday night at 7 pm – it was packed. colleagues asked if it was the franchise or daniel craig that motivated me to see it on opening night. hands down it was daniel craig. he embodies my fantasy male. rugged, brooding exciting masculinity. the opposite of the domesticated hyper intellectual, desk-riding metro male i live amongst. decisive, confident, and all the while intelligent (not a caveman). bond as played by dc is a tortured unfulfilled soul − utterly elusive, incapable of forming sustained intimate relationships. sad? bad bf material? proly, but i am too busy drooling. those eyes, cheekbones, shoulders. gah!!!

picks

picksjpga wise grandma once said, you can pick your friends, but you can’t pick your friends’ noses. she was wrong, tho. i have friends whose noses i’d pick if they needed me to. and here are two random entertainment picks selected for your sensory pleasure…

1) Q-TIP — The Renaissance

my crush on q-tip springs eternal. love this album. haven’t listened 2 it enough yet but i love, love love it and love love love the cutie Q-Tip.

2) Rachel Getting Married

jonathan demme’s new flick. it’s good. hard to watch having dealt with the ugliness of having an addict in the family. the self absorption. how it’s all about them. how — like it or not — it affects everyone’s relationships, lives. regardless, it’s worth seeing. beautiful ideas for a unique wedding. good music. anne hathaway is great.  here’s a clip.

season premiere

phyll and i saw burn after reading. it wasn’t great. good, but not great. notably, the studio is doing tons of marketing this time, fresh off the academy award for no country. this is not one of the cohen brother’s best. though frances mc dormand is still my hero. and it is funny to see george clooney as a cheesy lothario who wears a gold chain. but you can wait for netflix or cable. for sure. snl wasn’t so good either. breaks my heart. the cast is so talented. granted, phelps was a wet fish −didn’t give them much to work with in the hosting department but the writing was still quite weak. they can pull together and have a good season … just need to get their flow back.

other notable weekend things: in the theme of “being good to myself in a very tough time” i got a facial and had my apartment professionally cleaned. diva. i also slept 15 hours both days, thanks to some pharmacological aids. shwoo, am beginning to feel like a normal person again. ate and drank with pals, went on a 3 hour bike ride in the blistering heat, went shopping and bought some new fall shit. it’s a new season, bitches, and i am ready to go!

i was on national tv this morning!

click on this link and watch real close at :44. how’s that for a monday morning dance party?! NPH was totes cool and hilarious, BTW. check out this interview he did with the local boston TV folks. cuz kate, her fiance and their friends also made it out that night. here’s a pic of kate with NPH.

it was a fun weekend, albeit a tad exhausting. amid all the crap that’s going on en la vida col, work is a beam of sunshine. today i got to leave the office early, head out to the open and sit in the suite for a sick view of the Federer match. not so bad. in other positive news, ellen is finally back from vacation and my DVR is getting ready to get filled again with fresh new goodies. also the new coen brothers film is out friday — pumped for that too.

barf

nothing about this movie appeals to me. meg ryan’s face is crazy fucked up. debra messing is disturbingly thin. jada smith seems like a total bitch and i can’t stand her husband. annette’s talented but i’ve seen this movie enough times — first wives club, etc. bleh.

too much fun

my cousin kate has a story from her childhood that exemplifies the practical/repressed mindset of our parents when we were little. it was summer vacation and she had slept over at the neighbor’s house, hung at the pool with them, had pizza and cake and was invited to sleep over a second night in a row. kate was thrilled by the prospect of extending the party another day, but her mom said no. kate did what any 8 year old would do − she asked why not. her mom’s reply: “it’s just too much fun.”

i might have received similar castigation for the way i conducted this weekend. here are some things i did:

  1. got blonded at blow and tried to convince my pal david that paul mccartney/wings wasn’t all terrible. i even burned him a cd … he was nonplussed and tried to rope me into an either/or situation comparing post beatles paul to post beatles john. i told him to shut it — that if paul had died too we’d not been having this convo, and hell why does everything have to be compared to the prior body of work? he said john was on track to being perennially cool and i said okay fine but why do we have to put someone (paul) down?
  2. mailed several letters with shiny heart stickers on them.
  3. watched Julian Schnabel’s the diving bell and the butterfly. love love loved it and cried tons. need to read the book.
  4. had dinner with a delightful group on sat. night. learned about the u-nanna-versity of vajayjay, youparklikeanasshole.com and an amazing show on fx called damages.
  5. went down the shore with my girls. we laughed our asses off. sat amongst jersey’s finest tattoos, piercings, guido talk. i swam in the ocean and the water was peeeeeeeeeerfect. when my hair dried i looked like spicoli and ali quoted him and i twittered it.
  6. i left my wallet in new jersey (safe in a phyll’s car but still – tres inconvenient).
  7. i went for a bike ride (sans helmet − rebel yell!) and saw a rainbow.
  8. i bought one can of cat food ($.75) with some loose change so aretha won’t starve and talked jill into meeting me for drinks (that she’d buy) at the piggy.

the douchebag of the day award goes to the guy who wore the tshirt that said: “my labradoodle loves me no matter what my golf score is.” the runner up was a passive aggressive biker who snottily yelled out to a band of tourists as he rode by, “thanks for blocking the path!”

if a life this fun is wrong, i don’t want to be right.
