made it under the wire to the who shot rock & roll photography show at the brooklyn museum today (last weekend of the exhibition). we were warned in advance about the crowds, and heeded friends’ advice to get there there right when the museum opens. the other night a photographer friend said that it would probably be passe … that all those pictures and photographers were already well known. perhaps, but i am just a regular cookie and i’m still interested. it was neat. i got to read unknown to me interesting stories that correspond to various iconic photos and album covers. there was also some fabulous people (especially kid) watching. my favorite item, i think, was the picture of jimi hendrix in a tux backing up wilson pickett at a show in harlem circa 1966.
i love giving musical gifts. a mix cd. an LP. a concert experience. it’s one of my favorite things in the world to give to a loved one. music is better when shared. this morning i went to rebel rebel to pick up a CD i had on order for a pal’s 40th bday. missed his bday by two weeks (sorry gabe!) but by the time it arrived, bro bri and another pal’s bday had come along so i got to pick up some more gifties. unbeknownst to me it is “national record store day” and they gave me a free record for spending over $50. the collection looks like something i’d enjoy if i had a record player. here’s what i got and will soon give …
phoenix’s kitsune tabloid collection
queen live magic
aretha’s influences and inspiration
also picked up a couple of copies of pb&j’s living thing.
so much i want to say but won’t. for now. not in the mood to overshare. except for this ‘lil music meme i received from gem on facebook. it is totes fun. unlike the wack ass grammy’s with all those wack ass manufactured “stars.” the deal is …. you put your iTunes on shuffle and have to accept whatever song comes up for each of the following 25 questions. there is no rhyme or reason to it, really. especially since my iTunes is filled with music from many, many different people. guess that says something in itself! if i had to choose 5 that are possibly meaningful, i’d say it’s number’s 2, 6, 8, 19, 25.

“We each must become like fishermen, and go out onto the dark ocean of mind, and let your nets down into that sea.
“And what you’re after is not some behemoth that will tear through your nets, foul them, and drag you and your little boat into the abyss. Nor are what we looking for a bunch of sardines, that can slip through your net and disappear, ideas like ‘have you ever noticed that your little finger exactly fits your nostril’ and stuff like that.
“What we are looking for are middle-sized ideas that are not so small that they are trivial, and not so large that they are incomprehensible, but middle-sized ideas that we can wrestle into our boat and take back to the folks on shore, and have fish dinner.
“And everyone of us, this is what we should be looking for. It’s not for your elucidation, it’s not part of your self-directed psychotherapy; you are an explorer, and you represent our species.
“And the greatest good you can do is to bring back a new idea, because our world is endangered by the absence of good ideas. Our world is in crisis because of the absence of consciousness.
“And so, to whatever degree, any one of us can bring back a small piece of the picture, and contribute it to the building of the new paradigm.”
– Terence McKenna
what a world, what a time. dudes pullin’ $50 billion ponzi schemes and selling senate seats. entire industries folding, and with them the reigning social strata of the past 100 years. crime spree in my nabe (yikes!). so many people in deep denial about who they are and what life’s about. i don’t know anything more than the next gal, but i know madness when i see it.
1) “you’re crazy” by guns n’ roses — the song that comes to mind first.
2) “crazy” by britney spears — life imitates art?and i totes forgot vincent chase was in this video!
3) “let’s go crazy” by prince — if this is what crazy is, lock me up.
4) “crazy train” by ozzy osbourne — another iconic ode to madness from an unintelligible madman
5) “crazy” by gnarles barkley — when did this hit … 2, 3 years ago? still sticks to the brain.

“Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.” — Chinese Proverb
i am enamoured with the Obama camp’s brilliant approach to communications. They are DOIN’ IT RIGHT! It gets me excited to see how advanced they are — the GOVERNMENT LEADING THE CHARGE? When does that happen? Yesterday they announced a new initative “Your Seat at the Table” focused on creating transparency.
If more institutions took this approach, we’d see a shift in the face of leadership.
As a young woman in corporate America, it’s frustrating to watch the extent of the old boy’s club. The silos, the closed doors, the mediocrity and/or corruption of senior executives and corporate Boards of Directors who are supposed to provide governance and oversight, but who are so rich, out-of-touch, and complacent that they let huge pernicious trends go unchecked. The result, as we are experiencing right now, is crisis.
Let some other people in the room. People who have a view from the ground. Who have nothing to lose or protect so they’ll speak the truth.
